Canadian health care innovation lagging US health system significantly. Blue Mesa Health wants to do something about it with the Transform Diabetes Prevention Program.
VANCOUVER, BC / TheNewswire / January 17, 2017 - Blue Mesa Health Inc., an international digital therapeutics company with offices in Vancouver and New York, is pleased to announce that it has launched Transform DPP, its science-based digital diabetes prevention program, in Canada.
According to the Canadian Diabetes Association, one in three Canadians will either be prediabetic (at high risk for type 2 diabetes) or diabetic by 2020. Blue Mesa Health Inc. (“Blue Mesa”) launched its digital Diabetes Prevention Program (“DPP”) Transform in 2015 in the USA.
The program is based on the landmark US program presently delivered nationwide to address the problem of rising chronic disease-related health costs in the American health care system. The program combines software, home health monitoring via wireless scales, Fitbit activity trackers, and remote health coaching to guide participants through a clinically validated 16- week program. The program curriculum is derived from the results of a decade-long RCT, endorsed and validated by the CDC, American Medical Association and many other prominent population health organizations. The goal of the program is for participants to lose approximately 5-7% of their body weight and statistically reduce type 2 diabetes risk by 58%.
“I have seen firsthand the effectiveness of our program with participants in the United States. We’ve got people from coast to coast who are making changes and significantly reducing their risk for type 2 diabetes,” said Blue Mesa Health Inc. CEO Curtis Duggan. “People’s lives have been dramatically changed.”
“Canadians often hear about the access politics of the US health care system than they do about the great innovations like the DPP. With DPP, many federal, state-level, and community organizations came together to create a groundbreaking program that addresses chronic disease with a fairly simple but powerful concept — prevention through behavior change. What we’ve done is made this really convenient to access — with a scale and Fitbit delivered to your home, an app, a remote health coach, a digital support group. It’s just a great model for delivering this to as many people as possible.”
Blue Mesa is currently delivering a pilot program to Mount Sinai Health System in New York City. Blue Mesa Health is also a member of the Solera Health (“Solera”) network, which currently connects DPP providers with eligible participants in the Anthem Blue Cross network and other health plans across the United States.
